Special Friend
A Mentoring Program at
Harrowgate Elementary School
Why do some kids make it and others don't? The difference has to do with what we call "significant others." If a child has the assurance that just one person believes in him and loves him, no matter what he does, then that child will become a worthwhile adult. Studies suggest that a significant other can be a relative, a teacher, a janitor, a bank president, or any other caring adult. One person CAN make a difference.
'Special Friend'
- is a mentoring program at Harrowgate Elementary School.
- matches caring adults with children who have been identified as being at-risk socially, economically, and/or educationally.
- improves self-esteem, motivation, school attendance, attitude about school, and academic performance in children who may lack support from home.
- prevents school drop-outs by reaching at-risk children at an early age.
- asks that volunteers spend one hour a week at school being a special friend to a needy child.
Do you know?
...that a hundred years from now it will not matter what your bank account was, the sort of house you lived in, or the kind of car you drove...but the world may be better because you were important in the life of a child.
...98 cases of child abuse/neglect are reported in Virginia every day.
...the participants of the predicted crime wave of the future are in elementary school right now.
...at-risk children spend less than five minutes a day in positive conversation with their parents.
...many children go home to an empty home and no one ever looks at their school papers.
...that YOU can make a difference in the life of a child.
